The seven venomous species in Oklahoma are all pit vipers and are the only snakes with retractable fangs, elliptical pupils, and a single row of scales on the bottom of the tail behind the anus. Nonvenomous snakes:

• Have two rows of scales on the bottoms of their tails (except the Texas long-nosed snake).
• Mostly have round pupils like humans.
• Have heads that are usually only slightly wider than or the same width as their necks.

All Kansas snakes are permanent, year-round residents, and ten of the 38 species are designated as Threatened Species or Species in Need of Conservation.
